In 2005, Time Out New York did a feature article on the show and put Accomplice on the map of New York entertainment.  A few years later, actor Neil Patrick Harris attended the show and loved it so much that he invited the producers to come to the West Coast to create an all new Accomplice production in Hollywood.

Time Out’s praise for the New York show gave the Accomplice team hope that this creative project could succeed, and eight years later Accomplice is proud to announce that it is alive and kicking and as adventurous, comedic, and exciting as ever.

Below are excerpts from the article that brought Accomplice into the game!

Crime scenes

On Friday afternoon, the phone rings. “You know that thing that you’re supposed to do tomorrow that you don’t know nothin’ about?” the mystery caller asks, with the evasive bluntness of a seasoned thug. “That’s why I’m calling. Now pay attention, because I only got a second.”

So begins Accomplice: New York, an ingenious new game—equal parts interactive theater, puzzle challenge and walking tour—that draws participants into a web of intrigue spun across lower Manhattan. [...] There they are greeted by Louie, a wise guy in a black suit, who sends them on a mission: to be middlemen in an organized-crime scheme that will take them by foot to eclectic downtown destinations. At every station of the trip, they encounter new shady characters (played by seven improv-trained actors), who pass along clues to decipher.

“It’s a great deal of fun,” says Tony-winning producer Jeffrey Richards (Glengarry Glen Ross), who took part last month. “It’s sort of like being on a treasure hunt or scavenger hunt at camp.” The brainchild of siblings Tom and Betsy Salamon, who have been developing it since last year, Accomplice acquires a more grown-up coherence due to its noirish underworld theme. “[...]

“We try to walk a fine line between making it challenging, yet not impossible,” Tom says. “We love it when people get a little lost, but not too lost. Somebody ended up in an apartment in Chinatown once.”

[...] Participants are encouraged to improvise scenes with the characters they meet along the way, ensuring that every group’s adventure is unique.

“Our guys have to be really sharp and react to whatever people throw at them and whatever’s happening around them,” Tom says of his cast. “Just last week, one of our guys was approached in the middle of a scene by someone whose truck needed a push. So the entire group helped push this guy’s truck across Mulberry Street.” (Betsy adds: “At the end, the group didn’t believe us that it wasn’t part of the show.”)

The kaleidoscopic flux of lower Manhattan, inevitably, ends up being one of Accomplice‘s key partners in crime. “Every week there’s some kind of gathering down there that makes for a better scene,” Tom notes. “Hopefully, by the end of the day, it seems like everybody that you come into contact with—whether they’re with us or not—is an extra in your little story.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Oz The Great and Powerful:

“Oz The Great and Powerful” imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

The movie, “The Wizard of Oz” served as an inspiration for Accomplice.  It has an adventurous plot, a colorful cast of memorable characters, and the ongoing uncertainty over what is real and what is not!

What to expect in a Kevin Nealon performance?

Nealon’s comedy is centered around dry, sarcastic, and hyperbolically ridiculous zingers– “If you want a transcript of tonight’s program, get a pen and write down everything I said” but what’s especially poignant is the darkly blunt but insightful commentary that pops up in his show–   “If people can’t deal with their problems, they numb themselves a little bit”.

Richard Lewis, of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm is performing in West Midtown club, Carolines, this coming December.

Legendary comedy club, Carolines, started off as a small cabaret club, however, when Caroline Hirsch, owner and comedy enthusiast, began booking now-renowed comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, and Jay Leno, and as the popularity of stand-up surged throughout the 1980s, Carolines  became THE place to see comedy in New York City. For Carolines not much has changed in the last thirty years, the club is still a watering hole for fresh and talented comedians, including sarcastic New-Yorker, “When you’re in love it’s the most glorious two and a half days of your life”, Richard Lewis. During the month of December, Lewis will be working diligently with five shows at the venue that’ll be guaranteed to showcase his dry wit and eccentric commentary. Despite working in comedy for 40+ years Richard Lewis has been recently quoted by HuffPo as saying in his typical harsh, raw, self-deprecative manner:

I’m now so riddled with fear that I have no idea what’s happening… My performance level has risen and my anxiety-level has sky-rocketed. My act is always a work in progress.

But because of Lewis’s successful track record this quote is not a confession of sloppiness but an admission of his strength and commitment to the art of comedy. It is a sure sign that Richard Lewis cares about his performance enough to be a perfectionist.

Carolines rich history and appreciation for comedy legends makes it a perfect place for Richard Lewis. The venue’s legacy is easily recognizable to anyone who comes into the club through the bold-printed and geometric decor that gives both entertainers and audience members a throwback to the 80s and 90s of the club’s youth when New York was (in)famous for its stand-up.
